At New Abbey, we believe in unity over uniformity—that God loves our diversity. The good news of Jesus is that we are all God’s children, that we’re loved by God, and that God enjoys us. Each of us brought something different in with us today. Maybe it’s joy and celebration, or anxiety and fear. The reality is, it’s probably a mixture of things. Can we honor that God loves the diversity within us—that God loves us exactly where we are and for who we are? If we can honor that, can we also honor the diversity of the person whose hand we’re holding—that God loves them with all they’re carrying? And that they may be different than us; can we honor that God loves them—that they are God’s child, that they are loved by God, and that God enjoys them? And if we can do that, maybe we can do the most audacious thing Jesus ever asked of any of us. Can we learn to even love our enemy? These are easy words to say, but they will take a lifetime to live out. We come here to remind ourselves of these truths.
